Program Year 2

The PGY-2 year is spent rotating through 6-week rotations in the fall and then repeated again through the spring.

Oculoplastics:

Residents work one-on-one directly with our oculoplastic specialist, learning and honing surgical skills during procedures in clinic and in the operating room.

Pediatrics:

A heavy surgical rotation split between 2 pediatric specialists, this year allows the resident to participate in glaucoma, cataract, and strabismus cases in the operating room 2-3 days per week. The remainder of the week is spent seeing patients in clinic.

Sonny G Montgomery VA Medical Center:

Residents assist with cataract extractions twice a week, gradually learning individual steps of the procedure so that they are able to fully complete each step by the end of PGY-2 year. They act as the primary surgeon for minor procedures performed every Friday.

Comprehensive clinic/inpatient consult service:

While working in comprehensive clinic, residents are also able to interact and work with all subspecialists. In the afternoon, prisoner and inpatient consults are worked up and seen.

BCSC Course:

The residents attend the Basic Science Course in Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. Here, they attend over one hundred hours of didactic lectures led by more than 80 renown clinicians and scientists as well participate in various practical sessions including an orbital dissection, anatomy and histology laboratories, a phacoemulsification wet lab, and workshops in oculoplastics fillers and facial rejuvenation, ultrasound and Pentacam imaging, retinoscopy, refraction, and micro-invasion glaucoma surgery. During this month, residents are relieved of their call duties and clinical responsibilities by the PGY-I residents. Tuition is paid by the department and a stipend is given for housing and travel.
